Learn about our Virtual Cultural Exchange Program

We understand system-scale change is required to tackle the impacts of climate change and believe that the education system has a central part to play in the solution. Our goal is to take climate change education out of the realm of theory by having students confront the real impacts of climate change in nations such as Kiribati and work together on solutions.

How? HATS is delivering a Virtual Cultural Exchange Program. This is a cultural exchange program for Kiribati and Australian school-aged children to connect and learn together.

How The VCEP Works

  • Step 1

Schools in Kiribati and Australia will register for the program and are matched with a similar level class.

  • Step 2

Teachers and students will be given access to an online platform with information about the Virtual Cultural Exchange Program. Teachers will have a series of lesson plans in line with the teaching curriculum.

  • Step 3

Students will use digital tools to view media that shares cultural insights, values and traditions. The online content creates peer-to-peer learning and open forums for discussion within classrooms.

  • Step 4

Students will complete projects which involve self-directed research and reflection on what they have learnt during the VCEP. Projects are an opportunity for students to raise awareness of the issues of Climate Change with their families, community, and peers at the school.

The Key Benefits

  • Provides cultural insight and education

  • A greater appreciation and empathy for the people and countries who are affected by climate change

  • Children in the South Pacific learn about life in another country and are given the opportunity to share their personal experiences

  • The online platform becomes a cultural catalogue for future generations
